As usual, I have no idea what was going on here in my brain. The broadcasting company I work for as part-time digital manager is sadly going to get shut down by the government at the end of this year, and that's what we talked about.

Despite an insane workload at the office everyone's mood is buoyant. Threw the first one out in ten minutes.

Door deze film hielden hangjongeren tijdelijk op met hangen en gingen ze springen. Op graven. Waar dit in Brazilië nog werd gedaan ter ering en nagedachtenis van de doden, werd het in de rest van de wereld vooral gedaan uit rebellie. Tegen kerk en staat en tegen de eindigheid van het leven. Maar rebels of niet, sommige subculturen wisten er echt iets uitzonderlijks van te maken. Schoonspringen van graf naar graf bijvoorbeeld. Of een wedstrijdje wie er het snelst van het kale graf rechtsachter naar het graf met het verwelkte boeketje linksvoor kon komen. Dit alles uiteraard tot groot ongenoegen van de kerk die de film dan ook uit de bioscopen wist te halen. Tot nu.
Of de film ook nu weer eenzelfde effect zal bewerkstelligen is nog maar zeer de vraag, want afgezien van de historische waarde en de nog steeds erg lekkere soundtrack is de film niet meer en niet minder dan de titel belooft. En dat dik twee uur lang.' (AH)

One of a series of fictional movie posters and reviews for existing titles, culled from the yearly Rotterdam Film Festival catalogue. The review (fake as well) was written by Arianne Hinz. Produced for Sargasso & Zone 5300. 



'Verloren gewaand minimalistisch meesterwerk uit 1933. Deze half-animatie half real-action film was zijn tijd ver vooruit. Bovendien wordt hij begeleid door een ook nu nog lekker swingende soundtrack van wilde jazz. Geen wonder dus dat hij destijds wereldwijd een enorme rage wist te ontketenen.

I fired up Flash again and made an animated gif for the Dutch website 365dagenkunst (365 days of art), which features a new piece of work by artists each day. From now on I'm supposed to contribute something each month. Hope I can keep it up.

'll be damned. My first e-book! Now in the iTunes store: Gemekker. A collection of hilarious columns by ex-Windows user Ferry Piekart about his infatuation with anything Apple. With gloriously crappy illustrations by me. Sorry: totally not interesting if you can't read Dutch. But they were fun to make. I had to laugh each time I received a new column in my mailbox. Ferry mercilessly takes the piss out of himself.
Get it now for only 3,49 € in the iTunes store. If you buy it I might just about make enough money to get to read it myself, because I don't have an iPad or an iPhone.

Hibou aan de lijn met Marten Toonder. Gemaakt voor een special over de Boeddha in Toonder op bodhitv.nl, met nog meer tekenaars, waaronder Frits Jonker en Raoul Deleo.

Oddly enough it's a bit of a blur what we all talked about. I met with a young tv-producer and discussed his upcoming documentary. Afterwards I was told he was trying to get my attention. I think I missed most of it because I was drawing making notes.

This meeting had something to do with social media and user generated content. God knows what this had to do with the drawing. Something like marketing buzz maybe?

Planetary Cubes for an educational project for Science Centre Nemo, consisting of eight cubes with all the planets and the solar system on them. The students have to cut out the flattened cubes, glue them together, and then figure out the right way to stack them all - there is only one correct way to do it!. The cubes look a bit wonky, because they were meant to be printed out by the schools on ordinary printer paper.
It took a lot of work to figure out which part of each planet had to go where. 

I was annoyed this day because of deadlines piling up. I went on a slight rant during the meeting, but I apologised afterwards.
Note: 'Klaar voor de dood' means 'Ready for death'.

The book is about (surprise) the twins Barrie en Harrie and includes a lot of puzzles which I didn't understand. You can buy the book in the iTunes store.

My take on the gothic Horror genre.

In 2009 verscheen het boek Een absolute mus - mussenwoorden in tekst en tekening.  Samenstellers Peter Müller en Bert Keizer bedachten een lijst woorden waar ‘mus’ in voorkwam – van Erasmus tot muskiet, van intimus tot musical – en verzochten tekenaars en schrijvers daarbij iets te maken. Ik kreeg het thema animus, dat van tekst werd voorzien door A.L. Snijders.

My bank allows customers to have their own custom bank pass. Two years ago I tried to get this drawing on it twice, but it got rejected each time. The bank never gives reasons why. I submitted it again this year, and finally they accepted it

Once I had a goldfish. I didn’t take care of it that well. Sometimes I wasn’t even able to see if it was still alive because of all the gunk in the bowl. And then one day, when I came home, I could see it clearly. Lying next to the bowl. Dead. This is in remembrance of my suicidal goldfish. Let’s call him Kurt.
